On June 20th, the World Trade Center Los Angeles (WTCLA) hosted its 9th annual Select LA Investment Summit in Long Beach, California.
The Select LA Summit is designed to help investors, domestic leaders, and international businesses exchange insights about growth opportunities throughout the LA region. The WTCLA is a vital part of the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation’s (LAEDC) Five Pillar Strategy for Economic Development in the region, serving as its international delivery arm. Summits like Select LA function as anchors for the organization’s annual program of international engagement. Recognized as the first official spin-off event of the United States Department of Commerce’s Select USA Summit, Select LA is an essential platform for international business operators seeking practical intelligence to explore, start, or expand a business in Los Angeles.
This year’s summit theme was “Invest in Innovation.” From the stories told in Hollywood to the frontiers explored from Space Beach, innovative technologies and ideas find their feet in this economic juggernaut of a region. The spirit of innovation extends beyond national boundaries, and LA’s business community and workforce reflect that essential diversity. Sessions at this year’s summit touched on all aspects of what makes LA the nation’s innovation hub, including the region’s startup boom, supply chain innovation, partnership ecosystems and business support services.
In keeping with tradition, we released this year’s 9th edition of the California Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) Report, with LAEDC’s Institute for Applied Economics (IAE) partnering in our research with Loyola Marymount University’s (LMU) prestigious Center for International Business Education (CIBE).
Shannon Sedgwick, Senior Director of IAE, kicked off the presentation of the report’s overall findings, highlighting key trends, opportunities, and challenges shaping the state’s global investment landscape and offering indispensable insights for investors seeking to navigate the complexities of international markets.
This year’s report revealed a major shift in the rankings of FDI source countries and regions, with the United Kingdom overtaking Japan as the largest investor in the state of California by number of jobs (113,292), with Japan holding it’s lead on number of foreign-owned enterprises (FOEs) in the golden state (3,280) and in the wages those companies pay to Californians ($10.6 billion). Important key findings from the report included:
800,084 jobs in California come from FOEs;
31% of those jobs (246,884) are in the manufacturing sector, and 22% are in the professional/business services sector;
FOEs paid an estimated total of $84 billion in wages to Californians this year.
This year, Dr. Richard (Zhen) Tang of CIBE conducted in-depth analysis by grouping FDI source countries and regions into four distinct investor profiles:
- Titans
- Prospects
- Rising Starts
- Untapped Horizons
This new analytical framework gives readers the capacity for much greater understanding of the underlying patterns of FDI in California, helping local governments and business communities develop more targeted and effective policies and strategies to customize their approach to FDI. The full results of the 2024 FDI Report can be found here.
Southern California maintains its lead as the largest destination region for FDI within the Golden State, with 213,142 jobs supported by FOEs in LA County alone. LAEDC’s Vice President of Business and International Trade Development, Allison Clark, followed the launch of the report with a showcase of what FDI means for LA, exploring the details of what makes the region such an attractive destination for international investors: the LA Advantage!
